The Zonta Club of Everett will hold a breakfast program meeting at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 3 at the Everett Golf & Country Club, 1500 52nd St. SE, in Everett. Breakfast is $13. The speaker will be Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney Janis Ellis, sharing the programs of Dawson Place — assistance for child-abuse victims. Reserve by July 31. Everett Soroptimist meetings

Soroptimist International of Everett will hold its next business meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Everett Golf & Country Club, 1500 52nd St. SE, in Everett. The volunteer organization for business and professional women works to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The organization is committed to serving local, national and international communities, and participating actively in decision-making at all levels of society. Aug. 30 is the fifth Wednesday of the month, and the club will meet at 11 a.m. at the local food bank to assist as needed. GIS/community demographics
workshop — Aug. 10 or 11

A one-day workshop will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on both Aug. 10 and 11 to teach the fundamentals of how to use a Geographic Information System (ArcGIS 9.1) in a way that is particularly relevant to social service providers, planners and researchers. Participants of the workshop, which will take place at Computer Classrooms, 10604 NE 38th Place, Suite 118, in Kirkland, will learn to make thematic maps of their community, geocode addresses and perform spatial queries and analysis. Participants also will learn how to extract and map census variables such as race, poverty, language, education, health and many others. Exercises are designed for beginners. Intermediate Excel skills required. Each student is assigned a computer on which to work for the day. Cost to attend is $399. United Way Spirit of Snohomish County
Breakfast — Sept. 7

United Way of Snohomish County will hold its 10th annual Spirit of Snohomish County Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Everett Events Center to recognize five of the community’s most remarkable volunteers. In addition to recognizing outstanding volunteers, the breakfast will serve as the kickoff for United Way’s Day of Caring, Sept. 15. This year’s Spirit Breakfast keynote speaker will be Erin Gruwell, an educator from Long Beach, Calif., whose work with at-risk kids is the subject of the upcoming movie “The Freedom Writers” starring Hilary Swank.
